- In London during World War II, Lily marries a Canadian soldier who immediately goes off to war. She and her newborn daughter are invited to come and live with his family in Canada, where conditions are not as splendid as he had described, and nobody knows if and when he will return.
- Three women -- all firstborn daughters of Japanese war brides -- recall their mothers' lives in 1950s America. These were the brides young GIs brought home from an enemy nation. By at least one estimate, nearly 50,000 Japanese women crossed the Pacific as wives of American men between the end of WWII and the close of the 1950s... an unprecedented, heretofore unthinkable migration of Asian women to US shores and yet an event that has been largely overlooked. Living in mostly isolated communities scattered across the US, the women were left largely to their own devices as they tried to navigate a racially segregated American society. Drawing on personal anecdotes we paint a portrait of their saga that is in equal measure triumph, humor and sadness. We tell their stories both as journalists, and as the mixed-race children who experienced firsthand their dreams, struggles and aspirations.
- Charles Joyce (also known as Chuck) joined the navy and sailed to various locations throughout Western Europe, including Scotland, where he met Catrina Nicholson (also known as Babs) and fell in love with her. However, Chuck was forced to return to Canada and left his Scottish girlfriend; in order to secure the relationship, Chuck sent an engagement ring in a Cracker Jack box to Babs and the two met up later and were married.
- "The Culture" is the 4th of 5 films that make up "War Brides of Japan, a docu*memory". M. Fumie, Diana and Sophia (Yoshi), discuss their Japanese heritages. Michelle, Stephanie, and Hannah talk about being 3rd generation "quapa".
- The principal industry of Plumville is the Plumville Iron Works, of which Ezra Plum is president. Sallie Plum, his daughter, is the sugar plum of Plumville. Frank Hazard, foreman of the works, realizes this. Two strangers arrive in Plumville. It is apparent to both that Ezra is some plum; further apparent to Dalziel that Sallie is an exceptional plum as plums go, and also apparent to Sargent that Amanda, the aunt, isn't such a bad plum at that. The strangers pose as foreign buyers with a war contract and Ezra falls hard. Frank, who is sweet on Sallie, and Judge Pendlehurst, who has more than a platonic affection for Amanda, suspect the newcomers, but they have Ezra trimmed for $25,000 before the city detectives reach Plumville. Ezra Plum collapses. Sallie Plum takes back Frank's ring and Amanda Plum starts a quarrel with the Judge, proving that the old affection has returned. And now there's a joy in Plumville, and the Plumville Iron Works hum merrily manufacturing cast iron hitching posts.
- "The Brides" is the 2nd of 5 films that make up "War Brides of Japan, a docu*memory". Asako-san ("The Best Ambassador") married a white GI while Fumiko-san ("Kitchens and a Priest") married a black one.
- "The Kids" is the 3rd of 5 films that make up "War Brides of Japan, a docu*memory". Roleta, Andy, Elaine, Naomi, Joan and Jean are all adult children of Japanese war brides, but each has their own unique story about growing up mixed-race.
